Confirmed sighting: New Covent Garden Food Co. Wild Strawberry and White Grape Juice
Posted: 17:11 Thu 16-Sep-2004. Price: 99p/ 250ml. Location: Sainsbury's North London and South Kensington. Sub-flavours: Wild Strawberry and White Grape (pictured); Orange, Peach and Apple; Mango, Pineapple and Lychee; Pineapple, Lemongrass and Ginger ("Seasonal"). Nutritional unusualness: Pineapple + Ginger one has 13.1g sugar/ 100ml (ie almost 11 sugar cubes per bottle).
Snackspot reports: In response to Sainsbury's getting in on the lucrative fruity soups market, traditional soup-maker New Covent Garden Food Co must have decided to devote their unused blender capacity to producing these handily grenade-shaped "natural" looking bottles of fruit juice. You can just about convince yourself that "Wild strawberry" really does taste of the "tiny, fragrant wild strawberries" it describes on the wrapper; the Orange, Peach and Apple isn't too exciting, and I haven't tried the Mango and Lychee one yet. The Pineapple, Lemongrass and Ginger variety is to be commended for its innovative flavour, but this seems to be at the cost of significantly more sugar - is it just me, or do other ginger-flavoured products also surreptitiously up the sugar-content, in order to counteract the ginger's spicy effect?
...In other beverage bulletins: nutty cereal-bar-makers Altu are reputed to be rolling out Altu Black, a premium soft drink (from 69p/ 250ml can) which uses root ginger, cinnamon and citrus oils to create a Coke-alike that's "naturally 30% lower in sugar than standard colas", while reader "Rich" felt no justification was necessary to ask us all to keep an eye out for the Chiquita "That's Banana" Banana Juice that he used to pay a pound for in
Sainsbury's Wickford, Essex, at least as recently as "about 2 years ago".

Comment: I wouldn't normally engage with spam-bots, but 'john' is suggesting we need diet pills; I can't speak for anyone else, but if I'm on a diet the last place I read is Snackspot - talk about torture!
