Confirmed sighting: Batchelors Cup a Soup + Crunch
Posted: 17:35 Tue 05-Oct-2004. Price: 49p. Location: Morrisons. Nutritional unusualness: None noted.
"Reg" reports: This comes in three flavours, but I
opted for Rich Tomato Soup and Black Pepper Croutons. I think the other
flavours were Chicken and a Vegetable one.
The soup was suprisingly thick for a packet soup, with a bit of a
Mediterranean taste. There were quite a few croutons too, not too
stingy. Pretty good overall for something in a packet.
...To his credit, "Reg" wasn't sure quite how new these were, but I've certainly never heard of them before - and, admittedly, was also under the impression that they might turn out to be soup-flavoured cereal bars, going from just the name. ("Reg" went on to claim that a source "in the flavourings industry" had told him to look out for "sweet flavours coming out for normally savoury things" coming soon, though that doesn't exactly narrow it down.) Anyway, in other crouton-related creativity: The Grocer suggests that Warburtons have introduced a semolina-topped Best Muffin Toast, while Premier Foods are bringing out Barbecue and Tomato Ketchup flavours of Smash instant mashed potato - neither of which appear on this authentic-looking spoof "Atkinz" menu successfully planted in several US branches of TGI Friday's, despite containing such mouth-watering treats as: Two whole sticks of fresh Dutch dairy butter on a bed of crisp bacon... served with a side of steaming cauliflower "fauxtatoes".
